HOW TO GET AROUND THE AMALFI COAST BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Want to visit the Amalfi Coast without worrying about parking and without spending a fortune? Use public transportation! Read the article to learn more.

by Roberta Cascone

All the villages of the Amalfi Coast are connected by State Road 163, known as the “Amalfitana,” one of the most beautiful roads in the world! With its 50 km or so of curves and hairpin bends, it puts even the most experienced drivers to the test; it also consists of only one lane in each direction, which makes it particularly problematic during the summer months, when the many tourist buses and private cars make it really busy and clogged. For this reason, especially if you plan to visit the Coast in the high season, I recommend that you avoid renting a private vehicle and rely on public transportation: you'll see, it's simple and effective, and it will allow you to enjoy the view even more! Moreover, it is definitely the cheapest way to move from one village to another. Parking lots, on the Coast, are few and almost always full in the summer months; moreover, they reach really high figures in peak season (even 12 euros per hour) and not everyone can or wants to spend that much for a few hours of parking.
And I'll tell you more! If you want to get to the Coast by public transportation, surely the most convenient choice is to reach Salerno by train. Then, with a ten-minute walk from the station you can get to the pier and jump on a ferry with which you can reach all coastal destinations.
That said, let's review the public transportation you can use on the Coast.

A Travelmar ferry

Travel by sea

The most popular solution for tourists and certainly the most effective way to get around the Amalfi Coast is to travel by sea! This allows you at the same time to enjoy exceptionally beautiful views and to move stress-free while avoiding city traffic. There are several ferry companies operating on the Amalfi Coast. In particular, with Travelmar fast ferries you have the opportunity to arrive at the port of many different destinations in a short time and at an affordable price. In fact, Travelmar ferries connect the ports of Salerno, Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Atrani, Amalfi, Praiano and Positano!
Not only that! If you want to visit more than one village in one day, you can also choose the “Piccoli Borghi” itinerary or the “Tour Costiera - Positano and Amalfi”: these solutions are really helpful since they allow you to optimize the time of your visit in each village.
On the other hand, if you don't feel like participating in an already organized tour, you can create your perfect itinerary by adding the stops you prefer at the ticket purchase stage! In short, it's an innovative, smart and inexpensive way to visit the Coast, just the way you like it!

Travel by land

The main bus line that runs all along the Amalfi Coast is SITASUD. Tickets are sold at the outlets you can find at the link in the “Some tips” box below. Otherwise, a quicker solution is to purchase tickets through the UnicoCampania app. Once downloaded, you can select “Sita Sud - Campania” and go on to choose the ticket that best suits your needs. You can either buy a single-ride ticket, choosing your starting point and destination, or select the fixed-rate ticket dedicated just to the Coast, which will allow you to take the bus as many times as you like over the course of 24 hours. This is a good solution especially if you want to visit several villages in the same day.
