Discovering Furore

The small town of Furore, nestled between the municipalities of Praiano and Conca dei Marini, is known as “the town which does not exist” due to the absence of a built-up area. As a matter of fact, the town sprawls along the coast’s steep cliffs and the houses are perched on the rocks.

Today Furore, with about 700 inhabitants, is still not very populated, but the locals made this town more valuable with “the artist’s walls”: works of art that have enhanced the beauty of this place turning it into an open-air museum. In the past, instead, this territory was so inhospitable that some people affirm that the first citizens of Furore were exiles from Amalfi.

Therefore, nowadays Furore with its murals but also with its churches is an opportunity you can not miss, especially if you love art.

The Church of St. Elia, for example, keeps a wonderful Triptych of Angelo Antonello from Capua that dates from the 15th century where we have the Virgin Mary with the SS Elia and Bartolomeo. Moreover, there are the wonderful churches of St. Michele and St. Giacomo.

Instead, if you want a relaxing and romantic stroll, there is the Giardino della Pellerina. Let this place enthralled you with its breathless view and its phrases taken from famous poems and songs which are reported on the majolica benches along the Viale di Cupido.

In conclusion, the small town of Furore due to its art, traditions, and breathless views will offer you more than you expect.

Furore and its Fjord

  • The name of the small town, Furore, comes from the fury of the sea which breaks against the cliffs during the stormy days. The original name was “Terra furoris”, in other words, Land of Fury.
  • Fiorduva is one of the best white wines in Italy and if you love wine, the Marina Cuomo winery is a must to visit.
  • Furore, one of the cities of wine, every year hosts a national event: the Palio delle Botti, in other words, a race that consists in rolling the barrels along the route. The winner is the first team who crosses the finishing line.
  • Among its typical liqueurs, there are the aphrodisiac Elisir delle Janare, a celery-based liqueur, and the Nanassino that is a prickly pear-based liqueur. The last one is also used in the preparation of typical almond-based pastries, known as “Cicale di Furore”.
