DISCOVER THE AMALFI COAST IN THREE DAYS

The Amalfi Coast, declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, consists of 13 municipalities, one more beautiful than the other. It takes more than a weekend to visit it all and this is the reason why I want to give you some ideas. Are you ready?

When the spring is in the air, the days get longer and the trees blossom, I love to make a quick trip to the Amalfi Coast, a few minutes from home. I love to stop off in the lay-bys along the State Road 163 and enjoy the breathtaking view!
Let’s hit the road! Come with me!
For this weekend the stops will be Positano, Amalfi and Ravello.

Positano

Day 1. Positano

If you come from Sorrento, Positano “the pearl of the Amalfi Coast” will be a good departing point for your tour. An ancient fishing village that because of its vertical development is also known in the world as “the vertical town”. You will be fascinated by the particularity of its colored houses perched on the rocks. The view from the sea and from the Spiaggia Grande will leave you breathless… Positano is such a postcard destination! The historic centre consists of narrow streets and small shops: get lost in the colors, scents and local traditions. The streets are narrow and do not be surprised by the number of the steps: it is a peculiarity of the Amalfi Coast.  Let you be tempted by the Moda Positano (Positano fashion style), the handmade sandals and the typical ceramics… it will be difficult to leave without buying anything!

Among the symbols of Positano there is, undoubtedly, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and its dome. The church dominates the beach “Spiaggia Grande” and it is an integral part of the landscape with its majolica dome which seems to evoke the colors of this place. Moreover, the Villa romana, discovered under the church, will allow you to make a journey into the past.

Let’s change the subject: if you want a refreshing dive, you need to know that the Spiaggia Grande is the most famous and crowded beach in Positano, whereas if you need peace of mind, there are the Fornillo beach, accessible by the Path of the Lovers, and the Arienzo beach - further away from the town centre - to which you will have access through a long staircase. It is not a coincidence that it is also known as the 300 steps beach.

Day 2. Amalfi

Spend your second day on the Amalfi Coast visiting Amalfi, the ancient maritime republic, characterized by its natural, historical and artistic beauty.
The visit to the Cathedral “Duomo di Sant’Andrea Apostolo” is mandatory and it stands in the homonymous square, “Piazza Duomo”. As soon as you reach the square, you will be in front of a huge staircase that will lead you inside the cathedral dedicated to Sant’Andrea, the patron saint of Amalfi. For the most superstitious couples, here is a curiosity: according to the legend, if you go up these stairs hand in hand with the person you love, you will never get married.
In this square focus your attention also on the Fountain of Sant’Andrea with its sculptures: the saint patron and the deity of the sea. Every time I come back to Amalfi I am amazed by all these beauties. After visiting the cathedral, I suggest a tasty break to the historical pastry shop Pansa. Here my favourite is the sfogliatella Santa Rosa (a typical pastry), but actually you will have a lot of choice. Personally, every time I come here, I would like to try all of them! After recharging your energy with a good pastry, get lost among the narrow streets of Amalfi.
The Paper museum is located about 10 minutes walking from the cathedral. Visit it if you want to discover the birth and story seeing and discovering of the Amalfi paper. It will be a unique experience and you will feel like going back in time.
In conclusion, here is another curiosity for you: just a few minutes away from the centre of Amalfi there is Atrani,  the smallest municipalities in Italy where the time seems to have stopped.

Day 3. Ravello

For your last day on the Amalfi Coast, come with me to Ravello. It is located in a high position compared to the other towns along the Amalfi Coast and this is the reason why it will offer you unforgettable views. When I think about Ravello, two villas come immediately to my mind: Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone.

Villa Rufolo, in the heart of Ravello, is a monumental complex that bears the name of the family who built it. It was visited, for the first time, by the German musician Richard Wagner in 1880. Every year a musical and cultural festival is set up and international world-renowned artists take part in it.

“Enchanted” is just how I feel every time I come back here.

On the other hand, Villa Cimbrone stands on the highest part of Ravello and it is about 10 minutes walking from Villa Rufolo. Its strategic location will offer you a view that I am sure will leave you speechless. Here there is indeed the famous “Terrazza dell’Infinito”. Undoubtedly, from here you will be able to enjoy a spectacular view, one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Amalfi Coast.

Our trip has come to an end… what are you waiting for? The Amalfi Coast is ready to welcome you and make you feel at home.
